When you’re dressing to impress, the choice between a tuxedo and a suit can be both daunting and hard to distinguish. Both options embody sophistication, but they also serve contrasting purposes. Here are five tips to help you decide which is best for your occasion.
WHAT IS THE OCCASION?
Tuxedos are typically reserved for black-tie events, such as weddings, galas, or formal dinners. They’ll include specific elements like satin lapels and buttons, and a cummerbund or waistcoat. Suits have a bit more range, and are realistically acceptable anywhere from business meetings to semi-formal events (depending on your personal taste).
START WITH THE SHIRT
With a tuxedo, a formal dress shirt is a must. This usually means a pleated or bib front shirt with French cuffs and a wingtip or spread collar. Suits are a bit less restrictive; you can wear anything from a crisp white shirt to a patterned or coloured option if the style allows.
DO SOME SHOEGAZING
If you’re keeping with traditions, tuxedos are the friend of patent leather shoes, which add a polished finish to the look. Loafers are also acceptable, provided they are highly polished. If you’re in a suit, you can opt for brogues, derbies, or even monk straps, in either leather or suede, depending on your desired level of formality.
ACCESSORISE WITH CARE
A tuxedo demands a black bow tie, while suits are less finicky (I’m sure you can see a pattern emerging here). Suits can take on a necktie, a bow tie, or no tie at all if you’re looking to appear a little more laid-back. Pocket squares are a must for both options, but if you’re sporting a tux, a white silk square is always the way to go.
BE (A LITTLE) SELFISH
Finally, think about how comfortable you’ll be. Tuxedos are built to be very structured and use hardy fabrics, and so aren’t usually the first pick for long or mobile events. However, black-tie events require integration, and showing up in a suit and tie for the sake of comfort will seriously cramp your style. Ultimately, you should consider the event first, followed by your personal taste and how you want to present yourself in relation to the people you’ll be around.
